The sole professional brass band in New Zealand is the New Zealand Army Band. This exceptional musical group has built an outstanding reputation for its versatility and innovation, and is internationally acclaimed as one of the world’s premier marching bands.

Established in 1964 primarily for state ceremonies and official occasions as a traditional brass ensemble, the New Zealand Army Band has transformed into one of the most versatile entertainment groups globally, showcasing talents across numerous musical styles and venues.

During the 1970s, the addition of rhythm instruments and singers allowed the band to expand its musical range to encompass swing, jazz, popular music, and rock. This evolution led to the creation of various smaller musical groups designed to support specific events, activities, and audiences. Through this development, the band has become both the key connection between New Zealand’s military and its citizens, and a significant recruitment asset for the New Zealand Defence Force.

Throughout the last fifty years, the New Zealand Army Band has performed worldwide, delivering captivating shows that blend music with movement, featuring distinctive choreography, comedy, and complex marching formations rarely seen among musical marching groups.

The band’s international appearances have included shows in Australia, the United Kingdom (England and Scotland), America, various European nations (Switzerland, France, Belgium, Germany, Italy, and Greece), Turkey, several Asian countries (Singapore, Malaysia, China, and Korea), the Middle East (United Arab Emirates and Israel), and Pacific island nations (Tonga and Vanuatu).
