Welcome to Oamaru

Oamaru is one of NZ’s oldest harbour towns surrounded by stunning natural beauty. It is centrally located on the South Island’s east coast 3 hours south of Christchurch or 90 minutes north of Dunedin. Oamaru’s museums, shops and galleries are situated within some of New Zealand’s best 19th century architecture. 

The Oamaru Opera House

The Oamaru Opera House is situated right in the centre of Oamaru’s bustling Thames street in the CBD Constructed in 1907 she’s one of the oldest and certainly the grandest buildings in town. 

The Opera house is free to visit during our opening hours of 8:30am to 4:00pm Monday to Friday. You’re welcome to take yourself on a self-guided tour of our front of house areas and guided tours of the building are available on request. Please call or email ahead to check availability. Our staff are happy to help.

For evening shows, you’ll usually be able to find ample street parking along Thames St or Wear St. The earlier you arrive, of course, the closer you can get! During the day there are generally spaces available along Thames St.
